Once again, hypermarkets have confirmed their dominant position in the Czech market (with 2% preference increase). As many as 43 % Czech households spend the highest share of their food expenditures in hypermarkets. Discount stores have maintained the second position – 25 % Czech households spend most money on food there. The popularity of supermarkets has declined slightly – 15 % Czech households prefer them when buying food. Smaller shops have maintained their last year position being preferred by 15% households.
People primarily choose hypermarkets due to the wide choice of goods. Discount stores generally attract consumer due to a combination of favourable prices and reasonable quality. Customers preferring supermarkets mostly decide on a basis of their easy availability and because of the pleasant and clean environment. Small shops are attractive for their customers for their easy accessibility, pleasant and helpful staff and also for easy orientation in the store.
Younger consumers (under 40) with higher education prefer shopping in hypermarkets and supermarkets. On the other hand, discount stores and small shops are popular with older customers and customers with lower education level.
Overall, Kaufland stores were the place, where Czech households spent most money on food last year, as 19 % households said Kaufland was their main food shopping place. Albert stores and Penny Market discount chain share the second place (both chains have identical preferences of 12 % households each). Tesco and Lidl also gained their position in the TOP 5 chains (each of them having preferences of about 10 % households).
Czech customers have tended to differentiate increasingly between individual chains. Chains have begun to profile significantly and – due to different combinations of price, assortment and quality of goods – they are able attract customers to various categories of goods. For example, Globus retail chain stores have been popular among Czech households as places of meat, sausages and organic food shopping. On the other hand Kaufland and Lidl chains have been successful with their offer of fruits, vegetables and pet food. People prefer buying soft drinks at Tesco within big shopping, whereas Albert supermarkets have become the favourite place for pastry and delicatessen shopping within frequent visits. Billa is a favourite place for cheese and fruit and vegetables shopping, whereas Penny Market has been popular for its dairy products, coffee and tea.
